Today’s retro week entry is Alexey Brodovitch (1898 – 1971) Russian photographer and graphic designer. Brodovitch revolutionized the way we work with editorial design, in the way he always used content to shape his design. His legacy from his work with Harper’s Bazaar is still present today.

Very good style, typography and design! Great graphic designer.
Comment by Rui Vieira November 12, 2008 @ 3:38 pmI like the style but doesn’t it effect the readers visual flow/path?
Comment by dinesh1201 November 13, 2008 @ 5:08 amWell it’s true that it might affect the readers reading flow. But I think it’s OK, we have to distinguish pleasure reading from usefullness reading mode. If this design was on the back of a bottle with chemicals that your kid just swallowed then it would be all wrong. In that situation we need to read something fast and then act. But a fashion magazine is different, we don’t read it for usefullness but for pleasure so the design needs to give us an experience, not necessarily a 100% optimized reading experience. Well that’s my opinion :-)
Comment by myanimalfarm November 13, 2008 @ 9:16 amToday, everyone talk about design but don’t understand the design.
Comment by Rui Vieira November 13, 2008 @ 6:33 pmIn this case the typography was used as visual art or page design.
