So You Need A Typeface

I never usually feature my students but I’m going to make an exception, we had such a brilliant critique today that I just want to say “Thank god for passionate students like mine!”. You guys rock!! (in spite of our verbal whupping; better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all). So let’s end the week with a student project, an info graphic related to the job we do as graphic designers. Julian did a flowchart of the choices we go through choosing fonts, with a humorous approach. A brilliant job on such a short project.

Be sure to click the pics to see a bigger version as it doesn’t come across in all its glory in small versions.

Have you ever thought: I wish there was two of me so I could do twice as much? Well if you run a designstudio with your twin brother that is almost true. So meet Moffitt.Moffitt. a designstudio run by two excellent graphic design twins, Andrew and Mark. They’ve done a wide variety of work, mostly in fashion and music, but one of the projects that really stand out for me is the work for Raleigh paper. I love that they made something tangible to express the interaction with paper.

Phew! Started the day with a nasty surprise. There’s been a break in at my job and they’ve run off with lots of stuff and broken loads more. That really pisses me off! Don’t these people realise how much something like this means to a small school with no money?!?! So my office was in quite a state this morning and I just had to go ahead and do soothing things like looking at beautiful fonts to calm me down.

That’s how I found Kari, a font from Positype designed by Niel Summerour. I love the heavy contrast, and there’s some really interesting swashes in the display font. Alas, there is still beauty in the world!

The Heads of State

I keep a regular look out for new posters by The Heads of State. They’re one of my fave poster studios and I love their style. Just check out this series of travel posters for cities in the States. I’m totally smitten with the Miami posters, although I’ve never been there, it reminds me a little bit of old Saul Bass posters.

I don’t feature art that often but I really have to show you Swedish artist Michael Johansson. I just love his scultures, they’re so graphic and the use of repetition, colour and texture is amazing. Being a complete Rubik’s Cube fanatic as a kid I am also loving the fact that he has named one of his pieces “Rubik’s Kitchen”, it must have been a slightly more complicated version of the lovely toy doing this piece.

I am totally in love with the work of Canadian illustrator Jon Klassen. His illustrations are a clever combination of clean,  simple shapes and rough textures. His colour pallet is often quite neutral but it makes such a powerful universe. He has also done various animations among which a musicvideo for U2.

I went to see the documentary “Died Young, Stayed Pretty” last night and although I wasn’t totally wowed by the movie it did remind me of Gigposters.com which is an impressive database of posters. Go ahead and have a look at the visual side of your fave bands. Here’s a few of mine.

I came across Austrian designer Josef Heigl a while back and really loved the project for SOB. It’s such a great name and the integration of different weights of typography and water in the identity is quite clever. I also love his own logo where the j and h is boiled down to the simplest form.

My Orange Box

It’s been a few computer free days over Easter break, needed a bit of a break before hell breaks loose getting ready exams with my students. But I’m back in Copenhagen today bringing you New York studio My Orange Box. I noticed first their work for The 341 (a gallery) which was built on a simple mathmatical grid. I love the simple execution of the white paper, thin black lines and the embossed letters.
