Editorial design is my fave of all graphic design diciplines. Sadly we don’t have a lot of guts in that department in Denmark. Most magazines use the same dull layout and typography whether it’s a article about fashion or mental illness. We should look at how they do it in the States where storytelling is key. The only great magazine we have in Denmark is ironically a free one, Ud & Se, which is the Danish Rails’ magazine for reading on their trains. I’m pretty sure it started as a distraction from the fact the trains ran less than perfect, but it certainly became a good distraction. With a convincing use of photos and illustration, and a good pinch of storytelling Ud & Se has even found it’s way to the good company of other great work at the SPD awards, in my recollection as the only Danish work, EVER! They even run a kids section at the back of the magazine which is just as well designed.
