So You Need A Typeface

I never usually feature my students but I’m going to make an exception, we had such a brilliant critique today that I just want to say “Thank god for passionate students like mine!”. You guys rock!! (in spite of our verbal whupping; better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all). So let’s end the week with a student project, an info graphic related to the job we do as graphic designers. Julian did a flowchart of the choices we go through choosing fonts, with a humorous approach. A brilliant job on such a short project.
See more by Julian on his website: http://julianhansen.com/
Be sure to click the pics to see a bigger version as it doesn’t come across in all its glory in small versions.

Pingback by jardenberg kommenterar – 17 Apr, 2010 | jardenberg unedited April 17, 2010 @ 11:03 amSo you need an image file type …
This is ~770K for JPEG with blocky text artifacts. Same image is ~380K as a 8-bit PNG, and ~190K as a 32 color GIF (with 16 levels of grey and 16 levels of yellow). If using the source to make the line art file types, result would be be much sharper than these shots in addition to much smaller file size.
Graphics design students should be taught which graphics formats are best suited for which designs.

Comment by steve April 17, 2010 @ 4:09 pmReally, really nice. And we’re honored Julian used our FontShop list as a basis. Saw just a few typos:
Eurostyle > Eurostile
Comment by Stephen Coles April 17, 2010 @ 4:23 pmDin > DIN
planispoken > plainspoken
Meta > FF Meta
Scala > FF Scala
Quite possibly the smartest Typography I have ever seen! And that is including Coke.
