Editorial design ♥

I’m spending a bit of time reacquainting myself with editorial design. It is my fave of all the graphic design disciplines, because it is of great importance that the designer him/herself is a great storyteller and understands how to perfectly visualize the written word. I also love it because it’s a very limited space, you might have a maximum of 4 spreads to pull out all the stops to make it eyecandy and a great companion for the copy, and then it’s on to the next thing. Maybe my own impatience finds this especially appealing ;-)

Lately I’ve discovered the amazingly talented Benjamin Barend Bours who’s a designer at GQ. I’m in awe! These opening spreads are perfect examples of my rant above. You could not switch the styles of ANY of these, because they tell the story so well. Actually, I think that might be a great way to put a design to the test; see if it would work on another story, if it does, it’s not specific enough, maybe even generic. But Benjamins work is definitely no such thing. I’m a fan!
